DOG DAYS
In 1977 the formation of Dog Days was discussed between art student Simon Le Bon and Alan St Clair who both attended Harrow Technical College of Art (north west London) and lived nearby by one another in Pinner. They had previously played together in a band called Bolleaux. Well that was a start - a singer and a guitarist. Also attending Harrow School Of Art was Olivier Behzadi who was keen to fill in on the drums.
Pete Johns was made aware of the plans from Simon and could play some limited guitar, but a second guitarist wasn't really needed. So he went out and bought a bass!
Carol Isaacs was a classically-trained piano player who answered their ad for a ‘new wave’ keyboard player in Melody Maker. Still at school she saved up for a Vox electric piano from her Saturday job in a ladies underwear store.
Several months were spent in bedrooms writing the material that would be the basis of the Dog Days' one-gig career. This was at Harrow School of Art sometime in 1978, opening for a band called Supercharge. After Dog Days played they declared 'Well that was Dog Shit'. Dog Days don't recall that bunch of old hippies being any better!
At some point the band recorded a demo in 4 hours at a studio in Acton (west London), which included the songs 'Permissive Society' and 'Only Room for Robots'.
We were all young - 20 or still teenagers at school with lives to lead. Simon decided to enrol on a drama course in Birmingham. The band members went their separate ways, with Carol joining mod band The Small Hours. Pete and Al formed a new band called Voxpop, playing many London gigs before Al went on to join Spear of Destiny. Olivier joined Academy who were signed to RCA records. Simon joined a band in Birmingham called Duran Duran. Wonder what happened to them?
